Car Shipping Tips

The following tips can save you time and money if you decide to ship an automobile:

Compare companies: Call Auto Shippers generates a list of FMCSA registered auto transporters based on your location and destination, and then provides reviews, company info, and a toll free 800 number to make your research fast and easy. We recommend calling at least 3 auto shippers for quotes to find the company that best meets your needs. When choosing your transporter things to keep in mind are: price, insurance coverage, time required for delivery, and quality of customer service.

Check with the FMCSA: The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration maintains a hotline (888) 368-7238 for consumers to check on a shipper’s license and insurance record as well as whether any complaints have been made about the company.

Consider location: It may be less expensive to ship your vehicle from one major city to another than to a suburb because more carriers cover the route. Typically companies offer door to door delivery, but you could save money if you are willing to drop off and pick up your automobile at a terminal.

Consider automobile size: The size and weight of your car play a large role in determining how much it will cost to ship your car. Larger vehicles take up more space on the auto transport truck, and are heavier, so this makes them more expensive to ship.

Consider auto value and age: If your car is a classic, brand new, or high end, it may be a good idea to consider an enclosed carrier. This offers more protection for the car from road hazards, elements etc.

Update your auto insurance: Our transporters are all licensed, bonded, and insured, but it is a good idea to find out the specifics of what your auto insurance company does and does not cover and consider upgrading to a more comprehensive policy, that includes theft and collision.

Plan ahead: Fewer cars are shipped during the winter months, so rates may be lower during that time. If possible consider booking your transport at least two weeks ahead of time to allow for planning and logistics. Moving a car cross country is a big operation logistically, but with the right company there will be little or no effort on your part. Most transporters do offer express services, but this may cost more. The more time you have to allow for your car to be shipped, the lower rate you are likely to get.
